Having been condemned, scourged, mocked, Jesus has to carry a heavy cross to go to Calvary where he will be crucified. Blistered backs covered with wounds, with a bundle of thorns on his head, bound neck like a sheep to the slaughter, not just the strength to stand up: "So they took Jesus, who, being his cross went forth to the place called Calvary, ... " (Jn. 19, 16-17). Jesus carries a cross that is not theirs, because it is the cross of our silence, our contempt, our sins.
